Being in the National Guard means that you are required to work one weekend a month, and for a two-week period each year, usually in the summer.
Role Description This part-time duty has available slots across the state of New York, with units in or around your hometown. Soldiers participate in regular training events, including physical fitness, classroom instruction, and field exercises, to build and maintain military skills. Day-to-day tasks may include operating and maintaining equipment, following orders from leadership, supporting unit missions, and completing required administrative and readiness activities. The role requires adherence to military standards of conduct, discipline, appearance, safety, and teamwork while contributing to the operational readiness of the unit.
Slots are available in a plethora of career fields, including infantry, aviation, field artillery, engineering, and mechanics, at Enlisted, Officer, and Warrant Officer levels.
Qualifications
- Ability to meet New York Army National Guard enlistment standards, including age, citizenship or legal residency, education, and background requirements.
- Commitment to physical fitness and readiness, with the ability to train regularly and meet Army physical fitness and medical standards.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and followership skills, including the ability to take direction, support peers, and work effectively in diverse groups.
- Capacity to learn new skills and follow structured training in areas such as equipment operation, basic military tasks, safety procedures, and mission support functions.
- High level of reliability, integrity, and professionalism, with willingness to serve during emergencies, weekends, and periodic extended training periods.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; additional education or vocational training is beneficial.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to training locations as needed.
