Summary
The Maintenance Mechanic Helper serves as a laborer and trades helper in the Facilities Management Service (FMS) at the Stratton VA Medical Center. The work involves a wide variety of tasks surrounding buildings and grounds - as well as various trade shops within FMS.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required - but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge - skills - and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element - which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Duties
- Duties include but are not limited to: Perform duties in the facility grounds department include mowing and watering of lawns - trimming and planting bushes - flowers - shrubs and trees
- Perform various landscaping duties - sweeping sidewalks and providing labor for snow removal activities after hours - nights - and weekends
- Provide support for general day-to-day maintenance of gardening and landscaping machinery
- Pick up and empties waste and recycle receptacles
- Clean vents - screens - trash cans - glass doors and equipment on medical center campus
- Operate all lawn and ground equipment - including power mowers and snow blowers
- Hand (brush) painting as a general maintenance practice on building ground equipment
- Perform minor mechanical work and adjustments on all lawn and grounds equipment including greasing wheels - changing mower blades - and belts on machinery
- Move furniture and equipment in and around facility campus
- Transport and deliver supplies and other items to and from buildings on and inside the medical center campus
- Assist higher grade workers with installation of wall partitions including sheetrock and wall repairs - hanging artwork in offices such as pictures - plaques - and decorative items
- Change ceiling tiles - repair flooring systems such as vinyl floor tiles - carpet tiles - and sub floor systems
- Assist was masonry duties by helping higher grade workers coordinate and mobilize tools and materials for masonry jobs including brick work - block - stone - and concrete
- Assist locksmith with keying and repairing locksets and installation of door closers - door repairs and hinges
- Assist higher grade workers in wall preparation for painting tasks
- Tape edging to accommodate in painting trim and framework
- Assist with mobilizing and setting up paint jobs including carrying paint supplies to area and setting up ladders and small-scale scaffolding jobs
- Assist in tearing down jobs and cleaning up brushes and rollers and keeping paint shop neat and orderly
- Assist higher grade workers with installing air filters - greasing motors - changing belts - cleaning vents and air intake grills - and assisting with refrigeration machinery repairs such as adding refrigerant to cooling systems - and assisting with swap out of defective parts
- Assist higher grade workers with repairs to domestic hot and cold-water line repairs - soldering - threading pipe - and installation of piping and sanitary drain systems
- Perform other duties as assigned

- The incumbent may work from ladders and scaffolding
- When operating equipment - the worker may be under a great deal of strain from constant reaching - bending - turning - and moving of hands - arms - feet - legs - and by the vibration and jerking of the equipment
- The incumbent carries - lifts - and handles parts and equipment weighing up to 90 pounds.
