WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position involves responsibility for participating in and overseeing the efficient operation and maintenance of a water treatment facility with a multi-medium system incorporating chlorination, cartridges and sand. The incumbent is responsible in the operation and maintenance of reservoirs, chlorination, filtration plants and the distribution system. Supervision may be exercised over the work of Reservoir Attendants and Water Maintenance Workers. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
-Supervises and operates pumps, valves, motors and related equipment;-Supervises and performs maintenance work and makes minor repairs to machinery and equipment;-Makes daily inspections of facilities and facility machinery and recommends necessary repairs and maintenance; -Records readings of meters, gauges and scales;-Regulates and adjusts chlorinators;-Takes samples of water for testing;-Plants and thins trees;-Cuts brush and maintains fire and transmission line lanes;-Maintains inventory of supplies, chemicals and equipment;-Maintains records and prepares reports on facility operations;-Trains subordinate employees as necessary;-May assist in general cleaning and custodial duties at the plant-Schedules and supervises the cleaning of filters;-Prepares annual operating budget estimates;-Supervises and directs the operation and maintenance of the distribution system including operation of AMI Water Meter System and associated software monitoring program
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the practices used and the equipment required in the operation and maintenance of a water treatment facility for the application of chemicals such as chlorine or chlorine compounds to the water; working knowledge of watershed ecology and watershed management practices; working knowledge of the principles and application of physics, chemistry and bacteriology as they relate to water purification; skill in the operation and repair of pumps, valves and related mechanical and electrical equipment; ability to read, understand and record data from gauges, scales and meters; ability to make routine laboratory and field tests for control of facility operations; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to understand and follow technical oral and written instructions; mechanical aptitude, physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. Strong computer skills desired.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of an appropriate level Water Treatment Plant Operators Certification for 2A Water Treatment Plant
SPECIAL REQUIREMNT: If the position requires operation of a motor vehicle and/or heavy machinery, then a valid NYS Drivers License is required at the time of appointment and throughout appointment.
NOTE: Pursuant to the NYS Sanitary Code an operator’s certification must be renewed every three years. Appointees must maintain a current certification for the duration of employment in this title.
