Ceramics Studio Assistant / Fabrication Assistant

Katie Stout Studio is seeking a skilled and reliable Ceramics Studio Assistant (studio fabricator / art production assistant) to support ceramic production and day-to-day studio operations in a dynamic, experimental art environment. This is a hands-on, process-driven role for someone who enjoys working with their hands, learns quickly through doing, and takes pride in precision and craft. The ideal candidate has prior ceramics or fabrication experience and is eager to contribute to ambitious sculptural and functional projects.
The position involves ceramic fabrication, glazing, kiln work, mixed-material processes, and essential studio upkeep, and is well suited to someone comfortable working across materials and using shop tools in an active production environment.
Responsibilities
· Assist with ceramic production, including hand-building, mold making, glazing, kiln loading/unloading, and assembly, with opportunities to grow into more complex mold systems over time
· Support glaze mixing, testing, and application
· Assist with mixed-material fabrication, including resin / epoxy, metal components, and basic hardware integration
· Use power tools safely and confidently, including angle grinders and basic shop tools
· Prep work surfaces, molds, and materials for production
· Maintain a clean, organized, and safe studio environment, including routine cleaning and basic equipment care
· Assist with packing, crating, and occasional installations or pickups, including basic art handling
Qualifications
- Experience with ceramics (school, studio, or production setting)
- Comfort working across materials, especially resin / epoxy and basic metal components
- Comfortable using power tools and following safety protocols
- Physically capable of handling repetitive, labor-intensive tasks and maintaining a steady pace in production
- Detail-oriented, reliable, and communicative, with strong follow-through on assigned tasks
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced studio with changing priorities and deadlines
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to ~50 lbs.
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work on your feet for extended periods.
- Comfortable working on concrete floors and in variable temperatures
Compensation
- $25–35/hour, commensurate with experience.
- Trial period with opportunity for increase based on performance and growth in responsibilities
- 3–4 days per week, with occasional 5-day weeks during busy periods
