Ecologist/Project Manager
Location: North Country Ecological Services Team - Gloversville, NY (Hybrid)
Employment Type: Full-time (Part-time considered)
Compensation: $80,000 to $90,000 annually (~$38-$43/hour, based on experience) plus benefits
Preferred Start Date: June 8, 2026
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced ecologist who can manage ecological assessment, restoration, and permitting projects from start to finish including client engagement, proposal development, budgeting, field implementation, and delivery. This role is for someone who is ready to take ownership of work, not just contribute to it. You will work closely with our Senior Ecologist while independently managing assigned projects, coordinating and supervising field technicians, communicating directly with clients and agencies, and ensuring successful project execution.
Key Responsibilities
Project Management & Client Leadership
- Lead ecological projects from proposal through completion
- Develop scopes of work, budgets, and schedules
- Serve as a primary point of contact for clients and agencies
- Manage project budgets, timelines, and deliverables
- Coordinate with administrative staff on invoicing and project setup
Ecological Fieldwork & Implementation
- Conduct and oversee wetland delineations, habitat assessments, and ecological surveys
- Lead restoration and natural resource management projects
- Supervise field crews and ensure high-quality data collection
Reporting, Permitting & Deliverables
- Prepare and manage technical reports, maps, and permit documentation
- Support and navigate state and federal permitting processes
- Ensure deliverables meet company and regulatory standards
Team Coordination
- Supervise and support field technicians
- Provide clear direction, expectations, and follow-through
- Collaborate with senior staff to maintain quality and consistency
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in ecology, environmental science, natural resources, or related field
- 5+ years of relevant experience, including demonstrated project management responsibility
- Direct experience managing projects from proposal through completion
- Experience communicating directly with clients, partners, and agencies
- Strong working knowledge of:
- Aquatic resource delineation and permitting
- Ecological surveys and habitat assessment
- Restoration and natural resource management
- Proficiency with GPS, ArcGIS Pro, and Microsoft 365
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
Preferred
- Supervisory experience
- Project Management Certification
- NYS Pesticide Applicator License
What We’re Looking For
This role is best suited for someone who takes ownership and follows through and is comfortable communicating directly with clients. This person understands how to balance fieldwork, budgets, and deadlines and is ready to grow into increased responsibility and leadership. This is not a training role for project management fundamentals. Candidates should have prior experience managing projects or major project components.
