To promote human rights (as set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and subsequent United Nations conventions and declarations) throughout the world for sexual and gender minorities by all or any of the following means:
- Eliminating infringements of human rights;
- Research into human rights issues;
- Raising awareness of human rights issues;
- Educating the public about human rights;
- Monitoring abuses of human rights;
- International advocacy of human rights;
- Providing technical advice to government and others on human rights matters.
Our Guiding Principles
- Principle 1: No one should be left behind in delivering the articles set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
- Principle 2: Every person has a part to play in achieving the goals and targets set out in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
- Principle 3: Positive change should be led by communities within a nation state and ReportOUT will support them to do this.
The Opportunity: Chair of Trustees
We are seeking an inspiring, values-driven individual to join ReportOUT as our Chair of Trustees. This is a unique opportunity to lead the Board of Trustees and help shape the future of a fastgrowing, internationally recognised organisation working at the forefront of LGBTQ+ human rights.
As Chair, you will provide strategic leadership, ensure strong governance, and work closely with the CEO to deliver ReportOUT’s mission and long-term vision.
Key Responsibilities
As Chair of Trustees, you will provide strong, values-led leadership to the Board, ensuring that ReportOUT operates with the highest standards of governance, accountability, and strategic clarity. You will work closely with the CEO to shape and deliver the organisation’s vision, ensuring that all activity remains aligned with its mission to advance the rights of sexual and gender minorities globally. The role requires you to guide the Board in setting strategic priorities, monitoring performance, and making informed decisions that maximise impact and public benefit.
You will play a central role in creating a positive, inclusive, and high-performing trustee culture,ensuring that all Trustees are supported, engaged, and held accountable in fulfilling their duties.This includes chairing board meetings effectively, overseeing robust governance processes, andensuring compliance with charity law and regulatory requirements. In partnership with theTreasurer and CEO, you will maintain oversight of the organisation’s financial health, ensuringtransparency, sustainability, and appropriate stewardship of resources.
Beyond governance, you will act as an ambassador for ReportOUT, helping to strengthen itsprofile, partnerships, and influence. You will also directly support and line manage the CEO,providing constructive challenge, guidance, and encouragement to enable their success and the continued growth of the organisation.
Who We’re Looking For
We are seeking an inspiring and committed individual who brings a strong understanding of governance and strategic leadership, alongside a genuine passion for advancing equality and human rights. You will be someone who can operate with integrity and sound judgement, able to navigate both opportunities and challenges with confidence while maintaining a clear focus on the organisation’s mission and long-term sustainability.
The ideal candidate will have experience of working with or alongside Boards, and an appreciation of the legal and regulatory responsibilities of trusteeship. You will be an effective communicator and relationship-builder, capable of creating an open, inclusive environment where diverse perspectives are welcomed and valued. Your leadership style will be collaborative and empowering, enabling Trustees, staff, and volunteers to contribute meaningfully and perform at their best.
We are particularly interested in individuals who bring strategic insight, a global outlook, and experience that can strengthen ReportOUT’s reach and impact whether through governance, advocacy, partnerships, or organisational development. Above all, you will share our commitment to championing the rights of LGBTQ+ communities worldwide and be motivated to help drive meaningful and lasting change.
Commitment
- Voluntary (unpaid) role
- Approximately 1–2 days per month
- Attendance at quaterly board meetings (virtual)
- Occasional additional meetings or events
