Position Summary:
The Network Administrator plays a central role in maintaining the district’s core technology infrastructure, ensuring that all schools remain securely connected and operational. This position oversees the configuration and protection of network systems, from managing firewalls and switches to safeguarding data flowing across internal and external pathways. It supports the district’s server environment and identity management platforms, ensuring reliable access to essential systems and communication tools. The role also guides the district’s phone and communication technologies, including the transition to modern cloud‑based calling solutions, while maintaining a large inventory of networked devices. In addition, the Network Administrator monitors and maintains enterprise security tools such as the district’s extensive cloud‑based camera system to provide continuous visibility and protection across all facilities.
Role Overview:
This position is responsible for the core infrastructure that keeps the district connected and secure.
Network Security: Manages firewalls and network switches; secures the district's internal and external traffic.
Systems Administration: Administers critical server infrastructure and identity management systems, including directory services and email accounts.
Communication Systems: Manages the transition from Cisco Call Manager to a secure WebEx environment and supports the district's 600+ network phones.
Enterprise Monitoring: Oversees the deployment and continuous monitoring of enterprise security systems, including 325+ cloud-based security cameras.
Environment Overview
The Network Administrator supports a complex, multi-site K–12 environment that includes:
- 440 Wireless Access Points
- 78 Network Switches
- 600 network phones (hybrid telephony environment)
- Firewall infrastructure with MFA and web filtering
- 12 physical servers and 28 virtual servers
- 6,000+ Chromebooks and multi-platform endpoint ecosystem
- Integrated Google Workspace with SSO
- District-managed PowerSchool SIS
Key Responsibilities
Network Infrastructure Management- Configure, maintain, and monitor core network infrastructure including switches, routers, wireless controllers, and firewall systems.
- Manage VLAN segmentation, routing protocols, QoS policies, and secure remote access.
- Oversee wireless network performance across all school buildings.
- Support and manage WAN connectivity and inter-building communications.
Cybersecurity & Access Control- Implement and maintain firewall policies and intrusion prevention controls.
- Monitor network security alerts and coordinate incident response procedures.
- Administer identity and access management systems including Active Directory, Entra ID, and SSO integrations.
- Support multi-factor authentication (MFA) enforcement.
- Assist in maintaining compliance with NYS Education Law 2-D and FERPA requirements.
Server & Systems Administration- Maintain virtual server infrastructure (VMware, Hyper-V, or equivalent platforms).
- Administer DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, and directory services.
- Support cloud-integrated services and hybrid identity configurations.
- Assist with data center maintenance and system upgrades.
Telephony & Communications- Support and maintain district phone systems, including transition from Cisco Call Manager to Webex environment.
- Troubleshoot VoIP connectivity and configuration issues.
- Maintain call routing and telephony reliability.
Monitoring & Performance Optimization- Utilize monitoring platforms to proactively detect network or system performance issues.
- Conduct regular infrastructure health checks and capacity planning.
- Document network topology, configurations, and standard operating procedures.
- Recommend improvements to enhance performance and reduce downtime.
Project Support- Participate in large-scale initiatives such as 1:1 Chromebook deployments and network modernization efforts.
- Support cloud migration and infrastructure upgrades.
- Assist with disaster recovery planning and failover testing.
Service & Collaboration- Provide Tier 3 escalation support to Help Desk personnel.
- Collaborate with internal district IT staff and external vendors.
- Maintain strong communication with building administrators and instructional staff.
- Participate in after-hours support for critical incidents when required.
Required Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in information technology, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5+ years of experience in enterprise network administration.
- Experience managing multi-site wired and wireless environments.
- Proficiency with enterprise firewall and network security systems.
- Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, VLANs, routing protocols, DNS, DHCP, and identity management.
- Experience with virtualization platforms and Windows Server administration.
- Strong documentation and troubleshooting skills.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience in K–12 or public-sector IT environments.
- Cisco, Microsoft, or security-related certifications (CCNA, CCNP, Security+, etc.).
- Experience with large-scale Chromebook or device deployments.
- Familiarity with Google Workspace and PowerSchool systems.
- Experience in cloud networking and hybrid identity environments.
