Litigation Paralegal

This position will provide paralegal support to multiple attorneys in civil litigation including, but not limited to the areas of personal injury, employment, contract, and construction. The successful candidate may also provide paralegal support for cases before administrative tribunals, including in the area of worker's compensation. The paralegal is expected to exercise considerable discretion and judgment in reviewing, summarizing, and compiling records, preparing pleadings and motions, and propounding and answering discovery.
This position supports multiple attorneys working in multiple areas of the law, primarily relating to civil litigation. This position may additionally provide paralegal support for worker's compensation. The successful candidate must be able to communicate well in both written and verbal form, be able to effectively prioritize workload to meet litigation related deadlines, and must be able to work with County staff, hired consultants/contractors, opposing counsel and experts as necessary to determine facts, obtain discovery and evidence.
What Would You Do?
- Prepares documents using Microsoft programs, convert them to PDF as applicable, and file them electronically with the various courts and tribunals of jurisdiction.
- Extensive legal research relating to complex problems and projects and prepare memoranda and/or opinions containing recommended courses of action and/or solutions.
- Conduct interviews with County employees to gather information relating to particular legal issues and/or litigation.
- Prepare drafts of pleadings, motions, discovery requests and discovery responses.
- Assist County Attorney and/or Assistant County Attorneys in preparing for trial and prepare responses to requests for legal opinions.
- Reviewing and summarizing records.
What Do You Need To Have?
- Associate’s degree or graduation from an accredited 2 year degree granting college or para-legal educational program or university in a related field and 3 years experience as a law clerk or a paralegal; or
- Bachelor's degree in a related field and 1 year of experience as a law clerk or a paralegal; or
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Driver’s License upon hire with eligibility based upon evaluation of a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) driving report.
- Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.
- Other knowledge, skills, abilities, and credentials required for a specific position.
Highly Desirable
- Significant experience with civil litigation from intake through trial.
- Some experience with construction litigation.
- Some experience with worker's compensation litigation.
- Notary Public.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Knowledge of State and Federal Court Rules.
- Ability to review medical records and identify records related to the claims at issue in the litigation.
- Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and accurately.
- Ability to create and file documents in electronic format.
